Why do rainbows have a finite amount of colors?

Rainbows have a finite amount of colors now, but they used to have infinite amount. So basically what happened was all of the colors were sitting there one sunny day after the rain, and it was SOOOOOOOOOOO beautiful, but then... purple farted.
